Join me for an evening talk and presentation about ply-split braiding. You’ll learn about the history and tradition of the technique, understand how it came to us here in the UK, and see what people are doing with this in a contemporary way.

This will be an in-person talk and PowerPoint presentation with time for questions at the end. I’ll also bring examples of traditional and contemporary ply-splitting to show you.

3-Hour Seminar

For anyone curious, wanting to know more, or wanting to get started, great! This session will help with that. Students will learn the basics of ply-split braiding, making three small projects. Students will work with the two main ply-split braiding structures known as POT and SCOT, will learn about quarter twists, and will know how to take things further after the session, gaining a practical and simple grounding in ply-split braiding.

1-Day Workshop

Ply-splitting, withoutthe “must have” equipment of a cord winder and gripfid… possible? Yes! Students will learn these low-tech solutions, in this hands-on workshop. Each student will make cords with a drill, a block of wood and some hooks (also with justtheir hands), will learn the limits and the potentials of these, and will use them to make projects with ply-split braiding and ply-split darning.

1-Day Workshop

This workshop will go to the roots of ply-split braiding. Students will make a traditional pattern from the camel belts of Rajasthan, a pattern in POT and SCOT in black and white; it’s something that all ply-splitters should make at least once. Students will also make a second, simpler camel belt braid, also in black and white. Students won’t make a whole camel belt in the workshop, but will leave with the skills to do so.
