We need an individual that enjoys using a computer for email, documents and the Internet. Experience with entering information into a data base is necessary.

· Receive, record and deposit cheques.

· Receive and input data from paper applications.

· Work with Membership Secretary in keeping records up to date.

Time commitment: Generally about 1-2 hours a month other than October/November when renewals are processed.

Braids and Banter

Just a reminder that our social chat, Braids and Banter will be on Saturday 3 January at 10 am EST, 3pm UK time and 4pm in Europe. For anyone who has not joined before, you can join us at any time between 3 and 5pm (UK time) - we know it is early on the west coast of the USA but several people join us for breakfast! It is an informal chat about what people are doing, questions they may have, how to use equipment so do join us on Saturday.

The conference registration is open and will remain open until April 2025. If you have not registered, do take a look because there are plenty of classes with spaces. Now that the initial registration is complete, you will receive a speedy response on your registration.

Braids 2019 - Additional information

    Braids 2019 - the emails about the conference with your workshop allocations are being sent out, however there is one additional factor to consider.  
  

    The conference ends at the start of the annual Iga Tenjin festival so if you want to stay for an extra night to enjoy the festival on Saturday 19th Oct 2019, please email secretary@braids2019.org BEFORE 19th Oct 2018 to ask for a reservation for the extra night.   If you are not sure of your travel arrangements, I suggest you book a room and cancel it later.    After 19th Oct 2018, you will not be able to book a room for the 19th Oct 2019 because the city gets fully booked.

Braids and Bands moving

Following a number of challenges with the Yahoo group, Braids and Bands, the Council took the decision to move the group to a different hosting site, Groups.io. The transfer to Groups.io has been initiated and all new members should join Groups.io rather than Yahoo.

In addition to the group on Groups.io, we have two groups on Facebook, Braids and Bands and Braid Society Members to try to ensure that we communicate to as wide an audience as possible.

Braids 2019 Registration open until 31 August 2018

Registration for Braids 2019 is now open at braids2019.org and click on Registration. You have until 31st August 2018 and workshops will not be assigned on first come, first served so you have plenty of time to decide on classes.

When you register, you select 4 choices of class for Monday-Tuesday and 4 choices for Thursday-Friday and for these choices you assign a weighting of 10-200. The total for the 4 choices must add up to 200.

You need to decide on your hotel booking since these need to be made by the organising committee in September. Rates for the hotels are provided. If you do not wish to stay at the conference hotels, you may not be able to change your mind later.

  Final call for prospective teachers and speakers

    For any teachers or speakers that would like to apply to Braids 2019, the applications must be submitted by April 1st, 2018 so you will need to be quick.
  

    
    To apply, you must pre-register at Braids2019.org and make sure you tick the box that you wish to teach or give a talk.   You will then be sent an application form that must be sent to tutors@braids2019.org by April 1st, 2018 (next week)

Braids 2019

Braids 2019 will be held in Iga City, Japan from 13-18 October 2019 organised by the Kumihimo Society of Japan. Pre-registration for the conference is available on the Braids 2019 website http://www.braids2019.org/index.html.

If you wish to apply to teach, then select the teaching and/or speaking box and Makiko Tada will send you an application form. All applications should be submitted by 1^st April 2018.

This year's AGM will be held in St Mark's Methodist Church, Gloucester Road, Cheltenham, GL51 8PX on Saturday 28th October from 11:30 a.m. (sign-in, sales, display and refreshments from 10:30) until approx 4p.m., with a fascinating guest lecture on "Weaving fabrics that shape themselves" from weaver and author Ann Richards. The proceedings of Braids 2016, Braids, Bands and Beyond is now available for purchase from the Braid Society (outside the USA and Canada) and from Braidershand (braidershand.com) and Giovanna Imperia Designs (giovannaimperia.com) in the USA and Canada. This wonderful book contains articles relating to all the workshops and talks given at Braids 2016 and is a wonderful addition to anyone's library.

Final call for registrations for Braids 2016. Registration will close on 31st May 2016.

Due to a few cancellations, there are spaces on some classes that were previously full.

There are still places at Braids 2016 with lots of classes still available covering tablet weaving, inkle weaving, kumihimo, hairwork, bobbin lace and ways to use your braids. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn from some of the best braiders in the world.

Braids 2016 Marketplace

During Braids 2016 we will be holding an informal marketplace on Monday and Thursday from 7 to 9 pm. This will be an opportunity to buy articles and supplies from tutors and attendees. We recently sent out a request to gauge the interest in being a vendor and we were inundated with responses. We have worked through the logistics with the University and they are now at maximum capacity and cannot accept any more requests. Given the nature of the conference, this is not a typical vendor hall however, there will be lots of tempting items and books for sale so do bring your money with you. The marketplace will be open to the public as well as conference attendees.

Travelling Exhibition - submission date extended

The 2016 Travelling Exhibition has the title, Inspired by winter light and landscape

You can interpret the theme as you wish and use whichever braiding technique you fancy.

Perhaps you have started a braid and not quite finished it yet or you have an idea but ran out of time - the deadline has been extended to February 24th to send your entries to Averil Otiv. The Travelling Exhibition is how we demonstrate to the world what braids look like and what you can do with them. It is shown at shows all around the UK so we welcome a wide range of techniques.

All full members of the Society can participate. Long haul members are most welcome to upgrade their membership so their work may be exhibited.

Please include a photograph and short text of the influence in the creation of the piece.

Happy New Year! 2016 is here and it is going to be a great year with our Conference in July. That is only a few months away and I'm sure that those who have registered are looking at their travel arrangements and thinking about what to bring. We will be contacting those who have registered in the next few weeks.

Braids 2016 Update

Registration is now fully open for our exciting conference, Braids 2016 - Braids, Bands and Beyond. A number of the classes are full but there are still many wonderful classes with space for attendees. It is an opportunity to meet the best braiders in the world with a wide range of skills. Further details can be found in the Braids 2016 programme and on the page of Tutors. There are lots of photos of what the tutors will be teaching.

Braids 2016 Registration

Braids 2016 registration has opened for all Braid Society members and the places are filling fast. To date we have 121 registrations with a limit of 200. Some of the classes are full so will not show when registering for the conference.

Some minor changes have been made to the programme for Linda Malan's class and Michael Hattori's biography. These are in V13 of the programme.

Registration for Braids 2016 will open on 1st November at 1pm Pacific time. The link to the registration system will open on this website, www.braidsociety.com at that time. The registration system is an online application form that guides you through the registration with payment options at the end.
An email will also be sent to all paid up members of the Braid Society with the link to the registration and then the link will be posted on this page and also on the Yahoo group, braids and bands.

Revised Braids 2016 Schedule

A number of changes have been made to the Braids 2016 workshop schedule and a new programme is available on the Braids 2016 page for download.

The key changes are:

Dominic Taylor will be teaching a two day class on cylindrical braids on Monday and Tuesday

Adrienne Gaskell's class on Embellished Oimatsu has been moved to Monday

Carol Wang's classes on Thursday and Friday were missing from the schedule although details were shown in the programme

Makiko Tada will be teaching Leno Braids on Thursday in a full day class. The previous programme showed this as a one hour class on Thursday and Friday.

Heather Torgenrud has withdrawn her class.

Demonstrating Braiding

This weekend is one of the big wool festivals in the UK. The Braid Society are attending Woolfest, Cockermouth in the beautiful lake district. The show starts on Friday 26th and continues on Saturday 27th June. There are a wide range of suppliers as well as sheep, alpacas and rabbits to see the fleece in the flesh! There are also equipment suppliers, lots of fleeces for the spinners out there, yarns and other accessories.

Two weeks ago, we demonstrated at Helmshore Textile Museum in Lancashire. This is an old cotton mill that is now a museum and was holding a weekend of textiles. It was fun and it is always interesting showing people the range of braids and narrowares that we make. Is there somewhere you could demonstrate braid making to people who may not have seen it before?

Date change for Braids 2016

To all Braids enthusiasts everywhere! Prepare to make an adjustment in your calendar . . . Braids 2016 is being moved up a week to July 24-30, 2106. It will still be at the same venue in Tacoma, WA. This adjustment in the schedule was made in order to avoid overlapping with the dates recently announced for HGA's Convergence 2016.

By adjusting the dates, participants, instructors, and vendors will have the possibility of participating in both events. Additional information about Braids 2016 will be available in The Braids Society June newsletter.

Welcome our 400th Member

We have welcomed our 400th member. She lives in Northwest USA and is interested in all aspects of braiding. As always we welcome new members to the Society. For you membership, you receive four newsletters a year as well as our journal, Strands. In addition, if you are a full member, you can get involved in braiding swaps and exhibitions. Anyone, members or otherwise can attend any Braid Society days or meet us at shows where we are demonstrating.

Who will be our 400th member?

We currently have 395 members. Who will be our 400th? The Council have decided to give a prize to our 400th member - a copy of Threads that Move which is the book produced as the proceedings of Braids 2012, a wonderful conference. Threads that Move is also available for sale via books for sale on our website and has details of all the workshops that were held in 2012 as well as the talks that were given. It is a great resource for anyone interested in braid and bands.

Council Meeting of Braid Society

Last Saturday we had the spring meeting of the Braid Society Council. We have three meetings a year at which the Council discuss and take actions relating to running the Society. The Council members are all volunteers who have agreed to take on roles to keep the Society running. We are always looking for new members and with technology, we can include international members of the Council to join the discussions.

Between meetings, we keep in contact via email. We can be contacted with any issues/suggestions/improvements to the council at council@braidsociety.com or directly to the Chair, Shirley Berlin at chair@braidsociety.com. Do get in touch either via email, through Facebook or via this website.

Braiding Activities this weekend

We have a busy weekend ahead for the Braid Society. Tomorrow, 11th April we are holding our first braiding day in the Netherlands. Good luck to them and I hope it goes well.

In the north west of the UK, in Frodsham, the Braid Society have a come and try day in the same premises at the World Textile day so we are looking forward to meeting lots of new interested people and on Sunday, we have the regular braiding day in Aldbourne. Members from all over the south of England and Wales meet at Aldbourne to socialise, make braids and learn new techniques.

Sami Weaving Course with Susan Foulkes

Sami Weaving Course in March. Susan Foulkes is running another online workshop on Braids and Bands, the Yahoo discussion group of the Braid Society. The workshop starts on 28 Feb.

This online workshop will look at weaving the special Sámi bands that have one or two groups of pattern threads that are lifted or lowered together. Technically this is called supplementary

Travelling Exhibition

For those that do not know about it, the Travelling Exhibition is packed in a box and is used for all... the demonstrations and shows where the Braid Society has a presence. Try Braiding

Happy New Year to everyone! If you have not tried it before, or even if you have, why not make the effort this year to go to a braiding event. We have a braiding event in Adelaide, Australia on Thursday, 15th January and then a number of events around the UK.

If you live in another country, why not set up your own braiding gathering? We have lots of information on the site about what to do and one of the Council can always help with any questions that you have.

Looking forward we will be having an online tutorial starting in March. This is set up on our Yahoo group, Braids and Bands and we are looking to set it up on the website as well.

The Council would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a very, very Happy New Year. This year has been a great year for the Braid Society with the Society growing throughout the year, lots of meetings at Come and Try days, Try Braiding and other names that mean a group of us have got together to enjoy braiding and expand our knowledge and demonstrations at lots of shows and other events. During 2014 we have also migrated our web site to the hosted membership site and this has worked extremely well for us - online registrations and renewals have been great for everyone.

We celebrated our 20th Anniversary at the end of our 21st year with a great AGM weekend with 3 workshops where we learnt lots, laughed a lot and spent time getting to know other members. We also hosted a wonderful exhibition - photos will be on the website in due course.

Work is underway for the next International conference in 2016 in Tacoma. More details to follow next year. With all this going on, 2015 is going to be an exciting year.

Aldbourne Come and Try Day

Braid Society Council Meeting

The Braid Society Council are meeting on 5th and 6th December for their regular meeting. We are also looking at the future plans for the Braid Society - what kind of Society do we want to be? how do we engage more with all our members, particularly those who live in the far corners of the world (from a UK perspective)? what else would members like us to do? Travelling Exhibition

Why not create something for our Travelling Exhibition? The theme for 2015 is 'Spring is Sprung' so get your imagination run and make something for us to display next year - it could be a braid using spring colours or based on a spring. The exhibits need to be sent in by end January 2015 and all the details are in the Newsletter. Only full members may send exhibits but it is easy to upgrade.

Great time to join the Braid Society

The new year for Braid Society membership 2014-15 has just got underway making it a great time to join. New members will receive the recently published journal, Strands 2014, to be followed by newsletters, opportunities to participate in activities through the year and Strands 2015 next October. Why not think of membership as a gift to a friend or relative interested in braids and bands? Just go to the ‘Join us’ page for more details.

Exhibition still on!

We had a very successful weekend and we have made £643 in the Silent Auction. This money will go towards an Educational Bursary in the future - where it will be used will be discussed at the next Council Meeting.

The Exhibition will be still be available at Reading Central Library until next Saturday, 25 October. It is a wonderful exhibition so if you do get the chance, please visit it.

The Swap packages have all been either sent out or taken by individuals at the AGM weekend. What a treat! 21 people took part so there was lots of variety.

The 2014 Strands magazine has also been published. It will be posted to all Braid Society members in the next couple of weeks.

Exhibition and AGM weekend

The Braid Society’s Biennial Exhibition is now on display in Reading Central Library and runs until 25^th October. There are 60 wonderful exhibits covering a wide range of techniques and submitted by members from the UK and internationally. Do visit if you can and be inspired. The Society’s 20^th Anniversary AGM weekend (17-19 October) is being held a short drive away at Wokefield Park. The AGM will be held there on Saturday 18^th October from 1.15pm – all Braid Society members are welcome. Strands 2014 will be available for collection. In addition there is to be a Silent Auction of the braiding equipment, threads and books donated by Mrs Hlia Douglas from her time studying in Japan. The proceeds will establish a bursary fund for learning at Braids2016.

Membership Renewals

It is that time of year again! The emails for your membership renewal will be in your inbox in the next few days. Renewing your membership is very simple and can be done online. As an alternative, you can still send in a renewal form or even pay your subscription directly into our bank account. The email provides you with all the information.

If you are coming to the AGM, you can renew there as well since the Council members will be there - we look forward to seeing as may of you as possible at the meeting.

AGM Weekend

Biennial Exhibition

I hope you are thinking about items for our exhibition.

The Travelling Exhibition subject for 2015 is 'Spring is Sprung'. Some of you might like to make something for the Biennial Exhibition that could then go on to the Travelling Exhibition. There is no requirement to do this, the Biennial Exhibition has no particular theme and, as far as possible, all items submitted will be displayed.

The exhibition will be housed in glass cabinets as they were in Manchester. The maximum height of any exhibit is 30 cm, a better height would be 15 cm because there are a limited number of shelves that can accommodate 30 cm. Since the exhibition will not have stewards, it is intended that the exhibits will be inside the glass cabinets. Although there is wall space, attaching items is not easy and they may fall off.

As always, we are anticipating a wonderful selection of items so get busy and get braiding.

Newsletter distributed

The March 2014 newsletter has been sent to all members, either by email or post. The newsletter contains the forms for the exhibition as well as details about the AGM weekend.

Registrations are now open for the AGM, please look on the events page and scroll down to October. We have discovered a minor glitch that the user cannot change the amount they pay so, if you don't want to pay the full amount, please leave the page.

Making Progress

We are slowly adding content to the site and this week our first member tried out the Braids and Bands forum. You can go in and subscribe to the forums and, having sorted out a setting, all members can create, read and reply to posts.

Over time, we hope to expand this.

Changes to site

The members directory has been move to the members only area. It was a mistake to have it in the public view.

An additional page has been added to the members area to link to old newsletters. If you have lost yours or cannot find the email, you can always find the current newsletters here.

We are starting to build up the information on the site so keep coming back to see what we are doing.

Getting there slowly

Thanks to everyone who has managed to log on and have a look around. We have spent our time getting the membership database right and there is no other content on this site yet....... At the moment there is nothing in the members area but over the next few weeks/months we will put more information onto the site.

We will have much more opportunity to load photos and other documents on this site so over time we will transition across to here

Password emails

Everyone who has a renewal pending has had a password email sent to them. You can either renew when you come onto the site or you can wait for the renewal email that will be dropping into your inbox in the next few days.

We'll be improving the site over the next few months now we have the members loaded in.
