Workshop description: Make a range of different silk braids using recipes from historic manuals dating from the 15th and 17th centuries. The workshop will start with the basic principles of the technique, looking at materials, preparation and the process of loop-manipulation. Students will begin by working through a series of different braid structures and patterns that can all be made by a single worker. Then, making the most of this Ideal opportunity, students will be able to team up with a partner in order to try out some more elaborate braids that require ‘two bodies’ (as well as looking at some ideas of how the recipes can be adapted to do on your own). Historical context and the study of surviving examples will be covered throughout the workshop. All materials included
